Parris's Magazine front cover Textual analysis

While doing my independent research I mainly focused on the British film magazine ‘Empire’ which is published by Bauer Media. The issue I will be analysing is for the film ‘Iron man 2’. The main image is of the main character who is ‘Iron Man’. The magazine draws more attention to the main image because it is placed in front of the actual magazine title. As you can see there is lighting shining down on the character, this could mean that they want the audience to feel he is a hero and maybe looked up to, preferably by young boys. The light source on iron man is his heart, which is a glowing mechanism inside him. The light being that bright could mean that he is ready to take on new missions and that he is bigger and better than he was before.

The title ‘Empire’ uses the ‘EF Kaffeesatz Schwarz’ font which causes the magazine to be differentiated with other magazines. This is because most magazines whether it is film, music or gossip happen to use basic bold fonts such as ‘Impact’ or ‘Kartika’.  The colour of the title is an electric blue which is the same colour as Iron Man’s heart, this could connote that the title ‘Empire’ is the heart of the whole magazine. The lightening behind and to the sides of the title look as if it’s electrocuting the title and that’s its creating making the title the energy source of the magazine. Underneath the title is what looks like a sticker that states ‘Ultimate review of 2009’. This could help capture the audience’s attention because it gives a reason as to why the audience will enjoy reading the review.

The release date and price of the magazine are in-between the to peaks of the letter ‘M’ in the title ‘Empire’. They could have been placed there to not draw away any attention from the title and for it to stay/hide in the distance.

The main cover lines which are about the main image are across the middle of the main image but below Iron Man’s heart. This is because the light from the heart is giving the cover line a bright glow to make it stand out more than the other cover lines so the audience knows that it is the main thing to read about in the magazine.  The cover lines at the bottom of the page do not stand out as much because the images are small and the white font is put on a dull grey which gives a sense or boredom.  

Health and Safety Considerations- Jennifer

During our research for our teaser trailer, we had to research health and safety considerations.  Before we start filming, we need to locate where the first aid box/aider and eye wash is so we know where to get it if something was to happen to someone on set.


Make up-

- Test allergies by putting a small sample if the product on a small area of the skin (back of hand), and wait 5 minutes to see if there's a reaction will show on the skin
- Work with clean hands
- Make sure all make up equipment is washed thoroughly
- Check if there are any cuts / open wounds on the skin before applying make up
- Check ingredients
- Open window to prevent strong smells ( consider ventilation)  
- Edible blood ( make sure the actor/ actress is not allergic )
- If actor/ actress were to use home made fake blood, make sure the actor/ actress are not allergic to any food ingredients that is used to make the blood

Electrical equipment-

- Make sure there are no loose cables or wires lying along the floor to prevent tripping
- Use Circuit Breakers with a lock mechanism to prevent electrocution if a fuse was to blow
- Check equipment for stability
- Make sure unused equipment are in their boxes, to prevent damage of equipment and tripping
- No liquids substances to be used around electrical equipment to prevent electrocution

Lighting- 


- Make sure that the actor/actress is not epileptic, so we can then decide to use a understudy for the making of our trailer
- When setting up the light for the trailer, we need to make sure that it is the right way up before switching it on ( so we do not blow the fuse and damage the equipment)

Responsibilities- 

- Make sure that everyone who has a specific role in the production team, should be doing what they need to do
- People who stand around doing nothing will face the consequences

Fire-  


The risk of a fire should not be underestimated, there are numerous ways a fire could start. Measures should be taken to minimise the risk of a fire.

- Use of flammable substances should be carefully handled
- Faulty electrical equipment ( should be checked before using)
- Untreated scenery and dressing
- Heaters
- NO SMOKING on site

Rubbish-


- Any rubbish ( especially broken glass) should be removed before any person uses the facilities for their project
- After using the studio, members of the production team should clean up after themselves

If these risks are not properly assessed, mistakes can be made which will cost money's worth for damage. Or worse cause injuries.

Equipment That Can Be Used By O.J

At the beginning of term when we were put into groups we were given tutorials on equipment that were available to us to use for are Horror teaser trailer this was ranged from electronic devices, make up equipment and various types of chemicals used to make a range of stuff. We also learned key tips on how to make our trailer very affective and target our specific target audience.
The key tips were very insightful such as 'Panning Drives the narrative,' etc.
The First piece of equipment we used that we had a tutorial on was a video recording camera called ' Canon E055 7D' in which we spent a minimum of a month learning how to operate this camera from panning left to right, video recording and taking pictures which will be very essential in the coming months when we record our teaser trailer. During this period we also started practicing with the 'Vinten Pro 5 Tripod' which obviously is a tripod (camera stand) where we learned how to unfold and make the stand: stand on it three legs we also learned how to out the camera on the tripod stand which is very technical and to also make sure the camera is level on a straight line 180 degrees.

The equipment listed in this document will be necessities in our trailer project these our the main devices that will be used and  be very key to the standard of our group production. There are other equipment that will be used but those our used for make up and props for the trailer.

Then we moved on to make up materials which can be used to make a range of things such as a fake finger and so on. The first material that was shown to us was silicon, latex, alginite drying substance

Audience Research Response via Social Network (Twitter) - Jennifer

As part of my audience research, I used one the worlds most trending social networking sites ' twitter' to get feedback from my respondent.

 I have started off asking the respondent easy questions, so they feel comfortable when answering the questions



The respondent is aged 18 which is very interesting as her age is within the age group of our target audience

 I have asked questions which will be beneficial for my groups practical work.






This person has stated that the do agree that colours is of importance especially when associated with feeling and action.







They also said that images and interview's are one of the unique selling points of a magazine, so I and my group will be taking this into account to make sure that the final product reaches its high.

The respondent would prefer to see a horror at night which is common for most horror fanatics









She has explained that the only inappropriate thing she finds about horror film is the portraying of females. Some people may find the way females are portrayed in horror films offensive, so we will be taking this into account, so we don't make a mistake of that.

She has also stated that she enjoys watching sci-Fi films, which is excellent as that is the main topic we are focusing on for our horror sub-genre


Music and acting is key during a trailer as it gives the audience more reason to watch the film


Overall our film classification s aged 15 so it is important that our story line suits that age specification.

Another way I was given feedback for my research was through email. 

In the beginning, I began to ask the respondent simple questions. I gradually started asking more specific quetions about the main topic. 

From my primary research, I discovered that this particular respondent, is more interested in calm Movies, which include comedy. However they did show some understanding as to what the aspects of a film requires certain material to make it a success. 

Classification of our film- Jennifer

The classification of a film is very important. Having looked at the specifications of each classification, I believe that a suitable classification for our film would be a '15. Reasons for this will be seeing as our film is a Zombie Horror with a variety of scientific coverage and playing on audiences primal fears. Our film overlaps with the fantasy and the thrill of horror. Also the content of our film includes hidden fears, a disease outbreak and surrealism which is interesting, as our target audience are fanatics for this type of sub- genre.

As we have decided to target our film to the '15' age certificate we will have to focus on the limitations and constraints that we will include in our film as it should be suitable for persons aged 15 and over. We will be taking into consideration the guidelines of this specific classification so it does not affect our film.
