Health and Safety Considerations- Jennifer

During our research for our teaser trailer, we had to research health and safety considerations.  Before we start filming, we need to locate where the first aid box/aider and eye wash is so we know where to get it if something was to happen to someone on set.

Make up-

- Test allergies by putting a small sample if the product on a small area of the skin (back of hand), and wait 5 minutes to see if there's a reaction will show on the skin
- Work with clean hands
- Make sure all make up equipment is washed thoroughly
- Check if there are any cuts / open wounds on the skin before applying make up
- Check ingredients
- Open window to prevent strong smells ( consider ventilation)
- Edible blood ( make sure the actor/ actress is not allergic )
- If actor/ actress were to use home made fake blood, make sure the actor/ actress are not allergic to any food ingredients that is used to make the blood

Electrical equipment-

- Make sure there are no loose cables or wires lying along the floor to prevent tripping
- Use Circuit Breakers with a lock mechanism to prevent electrocution if a fuse was to blow
- Check equipment for stability
- Make sure unused equipment are in their boxes, to prevent damage of equipment and tripping
- No liquids substances to be used around electrical equipment to prevent electrocution

Lighting-

- Make sure that the actor/actress is not epileptic, so we can then decide to use a understudy for the making of our trailer
- When setting up the light for the trailer, we need to make sure that it is the right way up before switching it on ( so we do not blow the fuse and damage the equipment)

Responsibilities-

- Make sure that everyone who has a specific role in the production team, should be doing what they need to do
- People who stand around doing nothing will face the consequences

Fire-

The risk of a fire should not be underestimated, there are numerous ways a fire could start. Measures should be taken to minimise the risk of a fire.

- Use of flammable substances should be carefully handled
- Faulty electrical equipment ( should be checked before using)
- Untreated scenery and dressing
- Heaters
- NO SMOKING on site

Rubbish-

- Any rubbish ( especially broken glass) should be removed before any person uses the facilities for their project
- After using the studio, members of the production team should clean up after themselves

If these risks are not properly assessed, mistakes can be made which will cost money's worth for damage. Or worse cause injuries.

Equipment That Can Be Used By O.J

At the beginning of term when we were put into groups we were given tutorials on equipment that were available to us to use for are Horror teaser trailer this was ranged from electronic devices, make up equipment and various types of chemicals used to make a range of stuff. We also learned key tips on how to make our trailer very affective and target our specific target audience.
The key tips were very insightful such as 'Panning Drives the narrative,' etc.
The First piece of equipment we used that we had a tutorial on was a video recording camera called ' Canon E055 7D' in which we spent a minimum of a month learning how to operate this camera from panning left to right, video recording and taking pictures which will be very essential in the coming months when we record our teaser trailer. During this period we also started practicing with the 'Vinten Pro 5 Tripod' which obviously is a tripod (camera stand) where we learned how to unfold and make the stand: stand on it three legs we also learned how to out the camera on the tripod stand which is very technical and to also make sure the camera is level on a straight line 180 degrees.

The equipment listed in this document will be necessities in our trailer project these our the main devices that will be used and  be very key to the standard of our group production. There are other equipment that will be used but those our used for make up and props for the trailer.

Then we moved on to make up materials which can be used to make a range of things such as a fake finger and so on. The first material that was shown to us was silicon, latex, alginite drying substance

Audience Research Response via Social Network (Twitter) - Jennifer

As part of my audience research, I used one the worlds most trending social networking sites ' twitter' to get feedback from my respondent.

I have started off asking the respondent easy questions, so they feel comfortable when answering the questions

The respondent is aged 18 which is very interesting as her age is within the age group of our target audience
I have asked questions which will be beneficial for my groups practical work.

This person has stated that the do agree that colours is of importance especially when associated with feeling and action.

They also said that images and interview's are one of the unique selling points of a magazine, so I and my group will be taking this into account to make sure that the final product reaches its high.

The respondent would prefer to see a horror at night which is common for most horror fanatics

She has explained that the only inappropriate thing she finds about horror film is the portraying of females. Some people may find the way females are portrayed in horror films offensive, so we will be taking this into account, so we don't make a mistake of that.
She has also stated that she enjoys watching sci-Fi films, which is excellent as that is the main topic we are focusing on for our horror sub-genre

Music and acting is key during a trailer as it gives the audience more reason to watch the film

Overall our film classification s aged 15 so it is important that our story line suits that age specification.

Audience Research Response via Yahoo ( e-mail) - Jennifer

Another way I was given feedback for my research was through email.

In the beginning, I began to ask the respondent simple questions. I gradually started asking more specific quetions about the main topic.

From my primary research, I discovered that this particular respondent, is more interested in calm Movies, which include comedy. However they did show some understanding as to what the aspects of a film requires certain material to make it a success.

Classification of our film- Jennifer

The classification of a film is very important. Having looked at the specifications of each classification, I believe that a suitable classification for our film would be a '15. Reasons for this will be seeing as our film is a Zombie Horror with a variety of scientific coverage and playing on audiences primal fears. Our film overlaps with the fantasy and the thrill of horror. Also the content of our film includes hidden fears, a disease outbreak and surrealism which is interesting, as our target audience are fanatics for this type of sub- genre.

As we have decided to target our film to the '15' age certificate we will have to focus on the limitations and constraints that we will include in our film as it should be suitable for persons aged 15 and over. We will be taking into consideration the guidelines of this specific classification so it does not affect our film.

Research on Film Classification -Jennifer

Every film is given an age certificate, it is the British Board of Film Classifications (BBFC) to decide what film get a certain age certificate. This law has been put into place, and it is vital that all film producers follow these laws otherwise they get fined. So they run the film through testing,to see what age certificate it should be given.

The BBFC is an independent, non governmental body who classify cinema films, videos, Blu-rays and games. Their headquarters is located in London UK, and the president of the BBFC is Quentin Thomas.

The classification a film is given can depend on a variety of things, such as
- Sexual Content
- Violence
- Drug use
- Lanaguage
- Discrimination
- Sexual Violence

Depending on what is in the film, lies with what classification is given. Classifications include

- U
Stands for 'Universal', and can be viewed by any person. This film rating will include no discrimination or sexual reference. Mild language and mild violence can be used, as long as it is suitable for younger viewers.

- PG
This classification stands for 'Parental Guidance', meaning that any person may watch the film, but are advised to do so with a parent or an authorised adult. Films with given this certificate may include short frightening scenes that should not necessarily scare children. Also mild bad language, but nothing too extreme, some natural nudity with no sexual content, some innuendo and mild sexual references and moderate violence without detail.

- 12 and 12 A
This means that any person aged 12 and over may view the movie, whilst a 12 A movie means that those under the age of 12 years may watch it under the supervision of an adult. Movies with this age certificate may include minor levels of discriminatory language, although this is unlikely, misuse of drugs if it is infrequent, moderate language . However, nudity is permitted but sexual content must be kept infrequent and not dwell too much in detail. To conclude moderate violence is permitted but again not in detail.

- 15
May be viewed by a person over the age of 15 or of the age of 15 and goes into more detail than a 12 rated film. Discrimination however must not be the general theme of the movie. Drug use may be shown but not promoted by the film. Easily accessible weapons must not be glamorised for example a kitchen knife.Frequent use of strong words are acceptable, but the strongest language is only acceptable in the correct contents and can not be overplayed.Nudity and sexual content is permitted but must not be shown in complete detail. Also violence can be strong, but shouldn't show any suffering or torment.

- 18
Can only be watched, bought or rented by someone over the age of 18. The usually include strong uses of discriminatory language, drug use is frequent and can be shown regularly in the film. Dangerous behaviour may be shown such as weapons and violence also the strongest of language may be used. Nudity and sexual scenes are acceptable, to conclude, violence may include suffering and torment and is frowned upon.

- R18
' Restricted 18' can only be shown to adults over the age of 18. Material such as encouraging an interest in sexual abusive activity which may include adults role playing as non-adults. Portrays any sexual activity which involves lack of consent. Any form of physical restraints which involves participants form indicating a withdrawal of consent. The implication of pain or acts which may cause lasting physical harm, whether real or simulated. Penetration of any object that shows violence of physical harm. Also any sexual content of physical abuse that doe not form part of a clearly consenting role playing game.

Audience Research Response via SMS- Jennifer

For this particular project, I have asked people about their views on horror films. I have used different ways of communicating socially instead of paper to carry out my research.
One of the ways I have conducted my research is by using SMS to get information from my target audience.

As you can see, this particular person is young and interested in reading magazines, however they do not have a preferable magazine.

Clearly at the beginning of the question a spelling mistake had been made, however that did not stop the respondent from answering the question. It shows that headlines are a unique selling point to her. In the media today headlines are important, as they are the first thing the audience see in print, TV and other types of media advertisement. Headlines attract and select the kind of prospects a researcher would like to have from their audience.

This individual believes that the idea of having a specific colour for a specific product is important for any product. Colour is a way of communicating through a product, so it can sell.

This person does not particulay like horror films, however doesn't find antything inappropriate about them. But this individual says that they would watch a horror in daytime, and expects the typical things to happen in a horror film.

This person usually watches a 15 age certificate film, which is usually the age certificate for a horror.

The storyline of a trailer is important, as it gives the audience an opportunity of choice, whether they want to watch the movie or not based on what they have
seen so far.

The individual has sated that they would think that a teaser trailer should be about 1 minute long, which is good, this way we will be able to give the audience enough but not too much too much coverage, so they can decide if they want to to see the finished film.

Our Logo -Created and written by Parris

When creating our logo for our production team name we went throught many stages that included drawing and using Adobe softwares on the computer. Our first stage of creating the logo was to draw up atleast 6 designs of which could feature in our teaser trailer. We came up with 8 over all and focused on the main logo being with the 'O' of 'Opaque' and trying to make it have some relevance with our trailer.

Finally after quite sometime thinking and designing we came up with our final logo design which consists on a hand squeezing a heart while it punches though the 'O' in 'Opaque'.

The next stage was to start creating the logo, by doing that I had used Adobe Illustrator to create the hand squeezing the heart. The first part I had to create was the white hand  with the pencil tool which you cannot see very Cleary because the background is white also. The second part was the squeezed heart and the blood dripping off. doing this was very difficult as i had to make sure there were no gaps left between the hand and heart.

During the last stage, I had uploaded the hand onto Adobe Photoshop so I was able to add words and a background. I had made the background black so the logo is easily readable. The words are a deep blue because we did not want the writing to be too bright or clash with the hand squeezing the heart. I had gotten the font from a website called 'www.dafont.com' which supplies a range of different fonts. The font I had used was in the 'Horror' section which included eroded fonts with blood splattered on each letter.

Our Horror Poster drafts

Parris's Poster Textual analysis

Film Title: One Missed Call
Year of Release: 2008
Director: Eric Valette
Producers: Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Scott Kroopf, Jennie Lew Tugend and Lauren Weissman
Distributors:  (Japan) Kadokawa Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures
One missed call which was written by Andrew Klavan is the American remake of the 2004 Japanese film ‘Chakushin Ari’ originally written by Yasushi Akimoto and Minako Daira.
A film poster is a type of advertisement used to promote a film. The purpose of the poster is to visually capture the audience’s attention so it can convince the audience to go and see the film when it is released. Film posters usually include the main image, a tagline, the film title and the release date. They could be put in magazines, billboards, on the sides of Double Decker buses in the UK and on the internet which is would mainly be social networking websites such a Facebook and Myspace.
On the One Missed Call poster I instantly notice the face on the poster. It is a close up shot of a persons face holding a phone to their ear. However the face is not a usual face as the eyes are made of to mouths supposedly screaming out loud. This could be used to make the audience wonder if the main person is a male or female as they cannot see their eyes, it could also make the audience wonder why the characters mouth who is used as eyes is screaming or what is making them scream. The main image looks as if they are fading away into the darkness as if the character does not want to be seen. This could show a sense of mystery as the image is fading away to become the unseen. Seeing as the dominant colour on the poster is black, this creates a sense of fear, death and evil. The tagline at the top of the poster above the main image and the release date below the main image are a dark red. This could symbolise that there could be a lot of blood, pain and maybe anger within the film.
The title and the information about the film are a plain white; however the title looks as if it becomes blurry at the bottom, of each letter. It is placed in the centre bottom of the page to make sure that the audience is able to read it clearly and easily. The title reads ‘One Missed Call’ this could mean that the film is straight forward because it means the main character(s) may die because they have missed a phone call from the supposed killer. The tagline ‘what will it sound like when you die?’ address the audience by asking a question directly to them. The question automatically lets the audience know that the victim in the film may hear a certain sound before/when they are about to die or they may be a certain noise when the killer kills the victim.

Moodboard

As you can see, in our mood board there are a range of different features our target audience will have such as the clothes they wear, their hobbies and their musical tastes. we have 2 main target audiences which are males and females within the 'Indie' genre and people within the 'Gothic genre'.

Our audience within the Gothic category will stereotypically wear certain shoes such as "creepers" which are a type of shoes and high buckled platform boots. They usually wear skinny jeans or really baggy trousers which happen to drag on the floor they tend to wear black cardigans on jumpers which may have their favourite band on it. Most Goths and emos will tend to have tattoos all over their bodies and will have various piercings and it is usually around their mouths; they also get their earlobes stretched. Their skin is naturally pale or will tend to put on white foundation to make them look paler, male goths hair are normally long and waxed and may sport fringes to cover half their face, while female goths will have unusually long hair that sometime will cover their face and will at bright florescent colours within its. Heavy metal and rock are the main genres they listen to and they aren't big on keeping up with society e.g. owning the latest phone.

Our audience withing the Indie category will stereotypically wear certain shoes such as skateboarding shoes and other types of canvas shoes. They also wear skinny jeans and casual trousers such as 'Chinos', they wear plain coloured hooded cardigans and jumpers which are usually branded by 'Vans' and 'Supreme'. They also wear checked shirts or  plain t-shirts. Some indie people have tattoos on their arms which are mainly arm coloured sleeve tattoos and tattoos that have a meaning to them personally. They don't particularly have many piercings but they happened to pierce and stretch their earlobes.
Their hobbies are mainly extreme sports such skateboarding, BMX biking, freestyle skating where they do all this at skate parks where there are ramps and poles so they can do and create tricks on.

So our main audiences would like our particular trailer because it is within the zombie sub genre of horror. This is because most zombie films can give off a sense of reality because of the location can seem as if it is very close their community. They may like movies from the director George A. Romero because his zombie films portray society and the demise of it which agrees with what goths think as it shows how corrupt society can be.

A practice shot for our trailer

In our trailer we plan to create a rapid head movement effect just like the scene in a Misfits trailer seen at 0:22 - 0:23 in the clip below.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NyPFQsO-Qk&feature=relmfu

When creating our version of the clip, we had to go through a number of stages in order for our clip to become a success. In the first stage our task was to find an area where our actor was able to sit still and not be disturbed. This way we were able to take pictures where the actor is fully focused on what they had to do. During this stage, we had set up a Vinten Pro tripod and connected the Canon EOS 7D camera, this way we were able to take at least 100 pictures, but instead we took 24 pictures just to practice how the effect would come out after we had taken the pictures.

In the next stage, we took the pictures off the memory card and we placed them on our desktop. We then opened up Adobe Photoshop to change the size of our images  to 1920 pixels for the width and 1080 pixels for the height.

After that we opened Final Cut Pro to convert the images into a short clip. We imported our photos from a folder on our desktop. We tried to make the space between the input and the output as small as possible before we moved it into the overwrite. Once we had done this to all the pictures, we clicked on the drop down menu on the bottom left hand of the screen, to show our video filmstrips. Once the filmstrips were shown we then used the razor blade tool to remove a certain amount of frames on each one, to leave just one frame for each photo. Once this was carried out, we modified the speed to make it faster, then we clicked export to use the quick time conversion tool, then we rendered all.

This was our final clip.......

Magazine & Poster Ideas By O.J

One of the tasks set when my group decided to make a horror teaser trailer which was mainly a zombie was to draw ideas of how the poster for our teaser trailer would be like and if we would follow the same conventions as a normal poster would for zombie or would we chanllenhe the normal conventions and do something different with our poster and see the outcome but with my rough skethces o chose to use the conventions of horror movies but with my own style.

From the scanned picture above the first two pictures at the top are my poster ideas the one on the right is the main character who is a mad sctientis with half of his face is focus and then in the backgrouond you have a table with different potions which is out focus so all the attention will be on the scientist to attract our target audience.
The second image on the top left is a picture of the scientist using a Mid-Shot with face tilited wearing a white lab coat and in the backgrounud i tried show white smoke with the wall or the main background being black so you can see the smoke with a hazard sign on the left.
The bottom right picture is my first magazine draft which is very basic with would be a establishing shot showing the surrounding of the scientist with the title of the magazine and writing on the right hand side of the magazine. and also the barcode on the bottom right.
And lastly the picture on the bottom right is another magazine sketch which is a sketch that follows a majority of conventions of magazine covers which is a Mid-Shot on the main cover  with text on the left and right handside about info inside the magazine  the masthead on the top with a slogan just underneath the masthead with the price and barcode also on the front page.

Camera Shots - written by Parris

When creating our trailer, we will be using a fish eye lens to create the feeling of peeping through a whole to look at the scientist.

While using the fish eye lens, we will be using a medium long shot to show most of the scientist and the table where he will be mixing the solution.
This is an example of a fish eye lens being used to give an effect of looking through a whole.

The fish eye lense we may use in the trailer was a 10mm x 22mm lense.

This is an example of the effect is gave when used.

Props needed - written by Parris

For our trailer, one of the props we will need in order for it to be a success is the solution that the scientist will be drinking. The solution will be lemonade as it is a common transparent drink which can sometime be fizzier than expected. Our actor who will play the scientist is not allergic to any of the ingredients with a lemonade can and will be able to consume the liquid.

The food colouring is a digestible substance used to give colour to food which is made from vegetable dyes. We will be using this substance to change our lemonade to a luminous green. To be able to do that we will have to test it out and try to discover how many drops of food colouring we will need to use.
Our scientist will be drinking out of a transparent measuring beaker to show what substance is in the beaker, it will also be used to give the effect that it really is a science lab.

These test tubes will be placed on the table to show that the scientist had to mix many different liquids together to create the 'cure'. It will also show that the he has tested many different liquids in order to make the 'cure'.
A medium sized table, the length of the scientist legs with be used to put all the beakers and test tubes on, it will also be used for the scientist to mix the solution in the beaker on.

Setting/The set - written by Parris

When making the trailer, we will need a background setting in order for our scene to look realistic. We will be placing our lighting in a way that the background will be mainly black and that nothing except the main object will be seen.

The lighting that will be placed on the scientist and the objects in front of him will be a Hunter green or a Phthalo green. The colour green connotes life, renewal, health, nature and environment. This will collaborate with the scientist and the storyline of the trailer because the village that the scientist is living in is not well, meaning that the people around are unhealthy and sick.
The scientist will be mixing a solution at a desk/table where there will be other beakers and test tubes filled with different coloured liquid. He will be using the test tube or beaker filled with green coloured drinkable liquid.

Costume for the main character - written by Parris

In our teaser trailer our main character who is a scientist will be wearing a lab coat which will be covered in dirt and 'unknown' liquid solutions. this will emphasise the fact that the scientist is dedicated to what he does and that he spends most of his time there.

When drinking the solution that was meant to be a cure, the scientist turns into a zombie. So to make the scientist look as if he is a real zombie, he will be wearing white contacts lens which will only reveal the pupil of his eye.  Contact lens are a thin plastic/glass lens that is fitted over the cornea of the eye to correct various vision defects, however there are a type of contact lens that are not made for correct vision defects, but for changing the colour of a persons eye. This is the type of contact lens we will be using.

To make the scientist look as if he doesn’t leave his lab and does not change, he will be wearing old ripped shoes which look like they have not been kept in good conditions. This could underline that the scientist may have spilled the solutions he has been testing and that they have corroded his shoes.

The scientist will be wearing black or grey skinny jeans to show that he feels as if he is still young and tries to keep up with today’s trend/fashion sense.
