Horror Movie Conventions

Horror movies are divided into lots of sub- genres so in these sub-genres they have different conventions.

Some of the conventions used in horror are similar such as:
- Final girl
- Low-key lighting
- Very decrepit  places where major events take place

There are also some conventions that you may find in certain sub- genres for example slashers:
- The killer usually has a sharp weapon e.g. Mike Mysers
- The killer is a psychopath and it may link to their past
- Characters usually suffer violent deaths usually by the weapon that the killer holds

For a horror movie to be successful it will usually follow the conventions of horror and the conventions of the sub-genres otherwise the movie will be pointless causing it to suffer.

Scream
Conventions used
- Red Herring (Stu & Randy)
- Stock Characters/ Situations
- Final girl (Sidney)

Scream us a well known slasher series and it follows the conventions of a slasher which is the explanation for the status that is gain. In the movie I liked how they used the red herring devise because in the film it seemed that I was constantly guessing who the killer was until it was finally revealed.

I also liked how during the film horror conventions were pointed out as if they were watching one instead of living in one.

Halloween
Conventions used

- Final girl
- Icon ( mask)
- Stock situations

Halloween us another well known horror movie series which was inspired by psycho. In the movie I liked the story in general and how they explained Mike Myers past and why he became the villain that he was in the series. This was done in the original version.

Horror film director
George A. Romero

- He is known as the "Godfather of all zombies"
- Best known for his films on zombies
- His films are satirical

Romero is an important figure when it comes to horror films. He uses zombies as a way of representing things that happen in society and that be seen in many of his films. In an interview he said: " it was the film making, the fantasy, the fact that it was a fantasy and it had a few frightening, sort of bizarre thinks in it. It was everything. It was really a movie for me, and it gave me an early appreciation for the power of visual media-- the fact that you could experiment with it. He was doing all his tricks in- camera, and they were sort of obvious. That made me feel that, gee, maybe I could figure this medium out. It was transparent, but it worked."

Horror teaser trailer conventions
- The teaser trailer is no longer than two minutes
- It doesn't give away the story but it gives enough to make you want to see it or guess the plot
- High-key lighting isn't used
